Background
Shoreless Lake School (SLS) at Murcia was founded in 1997 as the Spanish branch of Shoreless Lake School of New Jersey, a school established in 1991 by the Reverend Alfonso Gálvez, president of the Society of Jesus Christ the Priest. SLS is a private, non-profit American school that offers offering a Catholic education from second through twelfth grades. The main campus, a new purpose-built facility, is located in Totana on a property called “La Isla.” SLS also has a Student Activity Center located in a property called “El Pedregal” in Mazarrón, Murcia.
Only a few yards from the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, the Student Center –home to the boys on weekends and vacations- includes students’ sleeping quarters, recreation areas, the main library, a study center, a chapel, a cinema room, playing fields, and scenic grounds where students commune with nature.
Although not affiliated with any diocese, SLS is a Catholic school. The Spanish Ministry of Education has approved SLS to run from grades two through twelve as an “American school for Spanish and foreign students.” The school is listed in the educational sections of the American Embassy in Madrid. In 2000, the Spanish government recognized the organization Mar Sin Orillas as an official, legal, non-profit organization, separate from the Society of Jesus Christ the Priest, to oversee the school's financial operations. The Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA) has accredited SLS as a “unique school offering quality education to students.”
Academically, SLS offers a college preparatory education. Students follow an American curriculum, and graduates are qualified to attend an American or European university. All students take PSAT, SAT Reasoning, SAT Subject tests (formerly known as SAT I and SAT II), and AP exams. Students applying to a Spanish university take the Selectividad, the general entrance examination for Spanish universities.
Our Philosophy
SLS, seeking an integral education of the human being, is the result of a long-cherished dream of the Society of Jesus Christ the Priest: to make available to young people an indispensable and total formation based on Catholic values and tradition. Such a lofty endeavor will be achieved on both intellectual and moral levels.
On the intellectual level, Shoreless Lake School will provide the students with the deepest and most comprehensive education. It will be based on a straightforward and non-compromising love of the truth, goodness, and beauty as the Catholic tradition understands those transcendentals, and always in the purest and most excellent academic terms.
Our Beliefs
Our school’s beliefs are:
-
the human being was created in the image and likeness of God and has been gifted with intellect and will to know and love God and all His creation.
-
only by developing intellectual and spiritual power to their paramount heights can the human being reach his full stature as an image of God.
-
the end and essence of the education imparted at SLS is the formation in our students of the perfect image of Jesus Christ.
-
great things cannot be understood or achieved but through work, and maximum performance in study, if the Christian happens to be a student.
-
work in itself is beautiful because through it man becomes a partner of God in the natural creation and in the building of His supernatural Kingdom.
-
youth is a time for generosity, for self-giving to high ideals, for setting out after great adventures.
-
young people are quite capable of falling in love with God and offering Him, out of love, the best of their intellects and of their hearts.
-
it is our responsibility to provide our students with an academic and spiritual environment conducive to learning that will guarantee our students will fit the Profile of Graduates.
Our Goals
-
To lead students to a knowledge of languages, literature, social studies, philosophy, mathematics, sciences, arts, and the classics through a course of studies across all grade levels.
-
To guide students toward career paths by providing them with the knowledge, tools, counseling, and experience that will enable them to make well-informed, appropiate choices.
-
To instill in students a work ethic that exemplifies the beauty of using their talents, skills, and intellects to their fullest capacity and propounds work as a partnership with and a product of love for God.
-
To invite young people to perfect the image of Jesus Christ within themselves by centering every aspect of their education in the fundamentals, ideals, values and tradition of Catholicism.
